Christie Desbiens
Early Childhood Educator in Sudbury, ON, Canada
My path to the field of education was not a straight forward one. I was born in Sudbury, Ontario in 1982 to a working class family (my mother was an at-home mom for my early childhood and my father worked for Falconbridge). I have one older sister. As a child, my love of reading started early on. One of my earliest memories was reading the book Narnia, following which I was hooked! Some of my other hobbies included swimming, karate, and I enjoyed anything involving music, although my attempts at learning an instrument were unfortunately unsuccessful. After I graduated high school, I went to Cambrian College and received my Social Services Worker diploma as well as my diploma in Early Childhood Education. In my career, I have worked as an Educational Assistant for both the Fort McMurray Public School Board in Alberta and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board in Ontario. In 2013, I became permanently employed with the Rainbow District School Board in Sudbury, Ontario. Since then, I have worked as an Early Childhood Educator in their French Immersion Program. It is through this position that I truly became passionate about teaching. Although I greatly enjoy my role in the kindergarten program, over the years, I have become very interested in expanding my skill set and learning to teach all of the primary/intermediate grades. This new path I chose to take ultimately took me to Laurentian University’s Concurrent Education Program where I am currently completing my Bachelor of Education Degree.
