Dave told Christopher Sabec that he could record the show as long as he got a copy sent to him. Chris obliged, recorded the show, sent him a copy right after, and sent Dave a letter asking him to give him a ring next time he was around. A couple of days later, Dave invited Christopher Sabec to go out and get dinner. At dinner, they talked about the music industry and Dave Matthews’ dreams of becoming a rock star.
Dave Matthews asked Christopher Sabec for is law expertise, as he was being approached with management contacts. Christopher Sabec knew that this kid had potential, and soared at the chance to become Dave Matthews’ lawyer. He was excited at the possibility of mixing his affinity for music with a career as an attorney. It was at that moment when Chris decided to throw himself into becoming an entertainment lawyer.
The next day, Chris called Bertis Downs (Manager and legal Advisor of R.E.M), told him what had just happened, and asked for guidance. Bertis was happy to help out. Via overnight mail, Bertis sent Chris a stack of books, and he got right to learning all he could about music law and the business behind the industry. Bertis introduced Chris to Marty Silfen, an infamous lawyer and Director of the Practicing Law institute’s program on Entertainment law. Marty became Chris’ mentor and guided him past his first contracts. Marty also referred Chris to numerous connections in the entertainment law industry as well as music professionals. This was the start of an illustrious career in the music industry as an entertainment lawyer and general manager for Christopher Sabec.
