Christy R. Starr, Phd
NSF Postdoctoral Scholar in Irvine, CA
Hi! My name is Christine R. Starr. I'm a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Irvine. My research explores how we can make STEM fields more diverse and welcoming (CV)
My recent publications have examined barriers that girls/women, first generation students, and students of color face in STEM (such as stereotypes and discrimination) as well as factors that can improve diversity and representation in STEM (such as active learning practices in classrooms).
At UCI, I work on a NSF funded project about adolescent STEM motivation, intersectionality, and families, led by Dr. Sandra Simpkins and Dr. Jacquelynne Eccles.
I received my doctorate in Developmental Psychology at University of California, Santa Cruz (graduate advisor: Dr. Campbell Leaper, Gender and Development Lab).
I received my bachelor’s in Psychology at Knox College (thesis advisor: Dr. Gail M. Ferguson, Culture and Family Life Lab).
In my personal life, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, yoga, and scootering/skating by the beach, especially with my girlfriend Tara. I also love board games and computer/video games.
I am proud to be queer, first-generation, and from a low-income/working class background.
Thanks for visting my website!
