Chugging
Many people are not familiar with the term chugging. This term is a combination of two words: charity and mugging. Chugging is direct fundraising, and it means that charities approach people directly and ask for donations. The chuggers, the ones asking for the money, approach people on the street and try to engage them in a conversation. They will tell people about the charity and what it tries to achieve. They then ask people to donate to that charity, and they often explain what their donations will help the charity to achieve.
Chugging has three distinct benefits, and if you are part of charity that is looking to raise money, you should take the time to learn a little bit about chugging.
Donations
First and foremost, chugging helps a charitable organisation to raise money. Generally, chuggers go after regular donations. Basically, they try to get people to sign up to donate on a regular basis, generally every month. Sometimes they will ask for one time donations instead. The real money maker when it comes to chugging is the regular donations. Many people will continue to donate for several years, giving the charity a reliable source of income.
Spreading Knowledge
Money is not the only benefit when it comes to chugging, and the chuggers help to educate the public about a variety of different charities. Many smaller charities simply are not that well known, and chuggers can help people on the street to learn about the charity. In some cases people like to do more research on a charity before they donate, so even if the person does not donate at the time, he or she might do so in the future.
