Clevette Roberts

In March 2009, the town of Kinston, NC gained a valuable outlet for self expressions. Illusions Open Mic brings together poets, rappers and song weavers, visual artists alike to share their art in a relaxed and creative environment.

Founder Clevette Roberts, also known as Chyna, has put on the event every month for two years at The Arts Center , home to the art of over 500 local and regional artists. Chyna was raised in Kinston, and spoke about the success of Illusions.

She was quick to give thanks to God and the community of artists who have supported her. She also commented on the open mindedness of the Kinston community. Many times there is a stigma about small towns, and their receptiveness to culture.

Chyna and Illusions Open Mic, rip that misconception to pieces with an amazing live band and a diverse group of performers. This poet and business women is on a mission.

She has featured in poetry showcases, plays, community awareness projects throughout North Carolina, and participated in the highly inspirational and moving workshop, I am NOT Damaged Goods, coordinated by Spoken Serenity located in the Greenville, NC area.

Ms. Roberts continues to expand her dream. She plans to open a a facility for the arts as well as a lounge in her hometown so that artists can have a permanent place to share their talents, teach, train and connect.
