Being "too curious" is a complaint that Christopher Cooper's parents always got when he was growing up. But Chris' curious mind has been the driving force behind his impressive journalistic abilities.
Chris was born in Kingston, Jamaica and attended two of the nation's most prestigious institutions - Vaz Preparatory School and Kingston College. At 15, he immigrated to the United States and attended International Arts Business School in Brooklyn. It was there Chris discovered his love for writing and reporting.
Leaving high school, Chris was the recipient of the Baker Family Foundation Scholarship and the Carolina Rice Scholarship. His conscientious attitude garnered many awards and recognitions at the school's 2nd annual graduation ceremony.
Chris chose Utica College of Syracuse University to purse a degree in journalism and public relations. He joined the school's newspaper in the spring of 2009 and never looked back, continuing to climb the leadership hierarchy on the paper's editorial board.
Chris' skills as a reporter was quickly noticed by the paper's management and he was hired to cover events for the paper's online edition. He spent 15 weeks as the Online Events Reporter.
Noticing Chris' attention to details and commitment to the growth of the paper, the editor-in-chief and the adviser promoted Chris to the copy editor position to write headlines for stories, and check them for factual and grammatical accuracy.
As the spring 2010 semester and Chris' tenure as copy editor came to an end, Chris was encouraged to submit an application to lead the paper over the next academic year. After much debate and interviews, the journalism and public relation faculty of the college selected Chris as editor-in-chief.
Chris managed, guided, and evaluated 16 editorial and 13 production personnel to produce 13 issues per semester. He was responsible for accuracy, range of coverage, assignments, story placement and content of newspaper and coordinated assignment of all stories, prepare weekly budget and provide input on design of newspaper. Chris often wrote the lead stories and/or editorial for each issue and was in charge of editing letters to the editor, opinion pieces, columns and editorial cartoons in the newspaper.
Chris served as editor-in-chief for two consecutive years, becoming only the third person to do so in the paper's 65 year history.
