Who am I and what do I know about stepfamilies?

My name is Claudette Chenevert and I’ve been in your shoes as a stepmom for over 29 years. I’m also a mom to a 36 year old son.

You see, I grew up watching the Brady Bunch and Sound of Music and thinking life was all wonderful and musical. But reality soon set in for Hubby and I went we started arguing about the kids, the house rules, who would discipline the kids, why did the ex have to be so involved in the kids’ lives, why didn’t anyone understand what I was going through.

We nearly didn’t make it because we didn’t understand what made our family different from the “traditional” family in which we grew up in. All our friends were happily first time married families. They couldn’t offer advice that was helpful. In fact, we got more bad advice than good.

I decided to go back to school and find the answers because I wanted to save my marriage and family. After many years researching, educating and certifying myself in everything I could put my hands on in regards to being a stepfamily, I started to see changes in my relationships with my husband, our kids and even the exes and extended family. We could finally breath.

I also knew that I wasn’t the only person out there with the same problems and felt I needed to share with you all the secrets and strategies I found and use in our family and with my clients.

This has been a transformational journey for all of us in our family and in the families I work with. One common theme I hear over and over is how making small changes in their lives has made a huge difference in how they relate to one another. It’s anything short of a miracle
