Her interest in the subject came after revelations that Assurant Health, part of Assurant Inc, was found guilty in a civil case of wrongly revoking the heath insurance policy of 17-year old Jerome Mitchell, who had contracted HIV while insured by Assurant Health. A Florence County, South Carolina, jury's 2004 order for Assurant to pay Mitchell $15 million for wrongfully canceling his policy was upheld by the South Carolina Supreme Court in 2009.
