  1. Clawson Saddles was established in 1947 by my father, Kirk Clawson. At the conclusion of World War II, Kirk returned home and began working in a saddle shop in Gallup, NM. With travel being difficult between Ramah and Gallup, and with the prompting of some of his friends and a leather salesman who frequented the area, Kirk purchased a few tools and set up shop in a one room log cabin in Ramah. He struggled with his new business for years, working jobs on the side to make ends meet, then in 1960, with the encouragement of Bruce Pike , his rodeo partner and friend from Albuquerque, a new saddle was designed that revolutionized his business. By the mid-sixties, his saddles were so popular that getting one meant waiting as long as two years; he couldn’t keep up with the demand. With the help of his children, business flourished.
When I went away to college in 1966 I found it difficult to find satisfactory work so I opened a small one room saddle and repair shop. I was involved with the production of quality custom saddles full time until 1990. At that point I completed my education, acquiring a MA in Ed Administration, began a career in education, but I have continued to produce saddles as time would allow.
In the course of my career, I have made saddles for The Worlds Western Fair, The National High School Finals, The North American Championships, several regional rodeo associations, individual State High School Finals, and many trophy saddles for individual rodeos. I have saddles in at least twenty states and have made saddles for celebrities such as Robert Redford, Wilford Brimley and Robert Duvall (he rode one of my saddles in the TV series, “Broken Trail”).
All of our saddles are custom orders. You choose the type of tree and type and the cosmetic affects desired. A base saddle is priced at $2,750.00 and can go as high as $6,500.00 depending on the amount of flowering, silver, etc. Currently, delivery will take from eight to fourteen weeks, depending on the length of time it take to get a saddle tree (Tree manufactures will usually deliver in four to eight weeks).
We also produce belts, chinks, chaps, purses, handbags, book bags, holsters, etc. If it can be built out of leather, we can most likely produce it. For more information, call one of the numbers listed above, or send me an email. I do not have a web site.
