Question: Buying a car but don't have insurance?

I'm in the process of getting my first car in my name on my own insurance.. How do I go about doing that? I can't get the insurance without knowing exactly what car I am getting, but my understanding is that I can't drive the car off the dealers lot until I have insurance in order to drive it home?
