To date, the best job I’ve had was at a startup called ThoughtSpot. Founded by Ajeet Singh, ThoughtSpot makes a data analytics solution that’s being used by Fortune 500 companies. I was fortune enough to get an internship in their marketing department for the summer going into my senior year. The company culture was awesome and working there came with a ton of perks, like free lunch every day. About halfway through my internship, I thought I had found my first job.Despite everything that was right about the company, after 3 months I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to move on to something new. Driving back to Colorado at the end of the summer, I thought I must be crazy for feeling this way. How could it be that after an amazing internship at a great company, I felt like I needed to start looking for a new place to work?
But as I thought about it more during my drive to Boulder, I realized that I’ve always bounced from one thing to the next. I had never stayed with any one interest, personal or professional, for very long. Instead, I would have an intense focus on one activity or skill, become proficient in it, and then move on to the next challenge. So instead of asking myself to focus on one industry for my entire career, I decided to see if there was anything that would give me the flexibility to explore multiple industries throughout my career.
Back in Boulder, I sat down for my first class of the year: Advertising and Promotions. I hadn’t taken an advertising class before, but as our professor laid out what we were going to cover I knew this was something that I wanted to look into. And I realized that a career in advertising would allow me to utilize my endless curiosity in a constructive way. Now I’m working to find the right agency to kick off my career. Easier said than done, but I’m enjoying the challenge.
