Colin Sexton
Teacher in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada
I am the Teacher-Librarian at the Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School Library in Surrey, BC. I have been in this position since the fall of 2007. I have been at the school since 1994 and taught Socials and English before making the switch to the library.
I am passionate about the power and joy of reading. My primary goal as a TL is to nurture and foster and support students as readers. I am also keenly interested in technology, particularly the integration of technology with best educational practice.
My hope is that the school library can be a dynamic place of active learning that defies the old stereotypes of the shushing old bitty. Sometimes the school library can be loud and chaotic. It must be open to new ways of teaching and learning.
However, I also strongly believe that there are traditions worth fighting for! The school library needs to continue to offer students a refuge from the bombardment of noise and chaos in the world by providing a place for quiet reflection, concentration, deep thinking, study and, yes, sustained, silent reading! Too many kids don't have a place like that.
