Colin Wee dragged his students into Bassai Dai for four relentless years—no breaks, no distractions, just one kata, over and over. The result? Breaking Through: The Secrets of Bassai Dai Kata, an award-winning book that cracked open the logic behind traditional martial arts and won the 2023 Best Indie Book Award (Non-Fiction: Martial Arts), plus a finalist nod at the International Book Awards.
With over four decades of training across three continents, Colin blends hard-style grit with soft-style adaptability, stripping tradition down to what works under pressure. He’s known for turning pattern training into tactical insight—and for making martial arts accessible to those who’ve never picked up a book on the subject.
A former National Representative and Assistant National Coach for the Archery Association of Singapore, Colin was inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2020 and now serves as its Secretary.
He’s currently deep in 19th-century Ryūkyū, researching the collapse of a kingdom and the birth of a martial system that refused to die. His upcoming historical fiction novel blends philosophy, rebellion, and storytelling—because sometimes, the best way to honor tradition is to rewrite it.
