Companions for Heroes founder David Sharpe endured life-threatening and emotionally scarring events during his wartime service as a member of the United States Air Force Security Forces. His path to healing began when his family adopted a rescue dog named Cheyenne. Although it didn’t happen right away, Cheyenne ultimately helped him to stop living a life of pain and start addressing his undiagnosed PTSD and depression. In 2009, David Sharpe embarked on a mission to share his healing experience with others. This mission would ultimately result in the establishment of Companions for Heroes.

Companions for Heroes provides companion and service dogs to military personnel, veterans, first responders, and police officers who have suffered trauma. By giving its clients something to nurture and care for, this Saint Simons Island, Georgia-based nonprofit hopes to bring them out of their private worlds of hardship and pain. Over the years, it has not only aided large numbers of people, but also saved large numbers of shelter and rescue dogs.
