Career divided between running NGOs and the foundations that support them. Environment, mostly, through the lens of economic sectors: agriculture, fisheries, transportation, housing. Also urban policy, historic preservation, public education. Chairman and Board Member of The Land Institute, National Environmental Trust, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (US).

Special interest in defense/security issues. Adjunct Professor of Military History, University of Massachusetts; Executive Director, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Nobel Peace Prize, 1985).

Editor and writer widely published in both popular and professional media. Current work-in-progress – Life Since 1945: The History of the Luckiest Generation.

Born in Ireland, lives with big family in Washington. Father of Benjamin Nugent, author, and Annie Baker, playwright.
