A good graphic designer can portray a message through any medium. Recently I have ventured into other mediums such as: web design, photography, printmaking, layout and screen printing. I had learned a lot in my undergraduate career and feel I am ready to take the next step in furthering my career in the arts. While finishing up my last semester in undergrad I hope to have learned as much as I can from inside and outside the classroom.
I have not decided if I will be attending graduate school in the near future however as I make that difficult yet important decision I plan to get my foot in the door with an entry-level position to help further my career in graphic design. While graduate school is important for some, I feel more experience would be more beneficial at this time before I peruse my Masters of Fine Art. In having real world experience I feel I would be better equip to handle the intense workload and the pressures of higher learning.
While every designer gains inspiration from different sources I obtain mine through past designers who have paved the way for us “rookies” to test the design waters of the art industry. I feel the two greatest designers of our generation are Jonathan Ive and Milton Glaser. Jonathon Ive is some what of a design mystery since we know little about his career before his fame at Apple. Ive is known for his industrial design of the iMac, iPhone and the iPod. Although most consumers do not know who Jonathan is they surely know his work. Jonathan’s influences are said to come from nature, honesty and music. His work portrays a clean yet uncomplicated feel to his designs.
As a graphic design student I and other students should be intrigued by Jonathan and his ability and skill. For me I admire him for his hard work to establish himself within the Apple Company. Jonathan should inspire all designers and students alike for his knowledge of the great computer we all use on a daily basis and daydream of the next latest and greatest. Ive leads the Apple industrial design team and has helped taken products out of the “creative ghetto”. Jonathan was the first designer to take apple hardware and design it not only for functionality but for visual appeal as well.
The second designer who I gain inspiration from is Milton Glaser. Glaser designed a logo for New York States department of economy called: “I Love New York”. He is the true definition of what graphic design is and how far it has come. Although
