Eyelid Surgery is a cosmetic surgery performed on the upper and lower eyelids to modify or improve their appearance. Blepharoplasty refers to the cosmetic plastic surgery procedure for correcting common facial defects, including drooping eyelids, wrinkling of the upper and lower eyelids, excessive crows' feet, sagging of the upper and lower eyelid edges, droopy eyelids and excess fat or fatty deposits around the eyes. It is done under general anesthesia and involves removal of excess skin to increase volume of upper and lower eyelids. In the case of cosmetic blepharoplasty, excess fat, scar tissue, and excess skin are removed from the upper and lower eyelid corners, or other areas of the face where excess skin is desired. It is often combined with eyelid augmentation surgery to change the size and shape of an existing drooping upper and lower eyelid.
Eyelid surgery, also called Blepharyngoplasty, can be done on adults or children. The procedures have been widely used as both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. Eyelid surgeons often use local anesthesia, but may require higher doses of lidocaine and local anesthetics to provide complete anesthesia and ensure successful treatment. Some patients may experience postoperative pain and swelling, which may require a follow up visit to a surgeon.
An important thing to know about eyelid surgery is that there are no guarantees that the surgery will work and that you will achieve the results you want. Although eyelid surgery is a relatively simple procedure, it is important to be aware that the results may take several weeks, sometimes months, before you see the dramatic improvement in your eyes. Eyelid surgery does not improve the length or shape of your eye, but instead, it is a cosmetic procedure that helps make your eyes look healthier. Before beginning any type of cosmetic procedure, you should discuss your options with your doctor or surgeon. You may want to ask about different types of eyelid surgery, or consider getting the procedure done under general anesthesia. In general, you should have a thorough understanding of the procedure before you begin any type of cosmetic or reconstructive surgery.
