Like any backstory, there is a beginning - there is a tale to tell that is unique from everyone else's - that will potentially hold another's attention for longer than the 15 seconds it takes for them to read it.
I believe that in stories, revealing too much too soon are not stories - they are news reports. I prefer a story to unfold, uncurl and wrap itself around the reader till there is no escape. ...and I still believe that, A dark and stormy night... is a great way to start a story.
