Calves are the life blood of the farm and represent a considerable investment. They need to be looked after properly to allow them to yield their life time potential and for heifer calves to have high quality future replacements.

An effective calf rearing program in conjunction with proper feeding is essential if calves for example on dairy farms are to reach the targets required for serving and calving down at 24 months. The first 12 weeks of the calves’ lives are critical in terms of subsequent development. Of the four main feed components, water, milk, forage and concentrates, worldwide research has shown that the latter is the main driving force in preparing the young milk fed calf to becoming a young ruminating animal thriving on forage and concentrate.
