I'd reached the age of 51. My job was coming to an end, friends had moved away, a beloved family member for whom I cared for for many years had died. Feeling increasingly disconnected from Sydney life, its traffic jams and brash youth culture, I started to crave change. What would it be like, I wondered, to live in a small community in another country and do something completely different? My partner Peter and I decided to take the leap. It took us a year to wind down our affairs, choose a location and turf out most of the sixteen years' worth of stuff we'd accumulated together. In October 2014 we set off.
