Cory Heffernan

Columbus, Ohio

I was born in Riverside Hospital, just slightly North of Downtown Columbus. I grew up in Grandview, a nice suburb of Columbus. I only lived there for a few years of my early childhood, then moved in Worthington, farther north near Delaware. This is the town I finished Elementary, Middle, and High School in. I started playing trumpet in seventh and eighth grade, and enjoyed it. I continued with the instrument in High School concert band, and moved up to Thomas Worthington’s wind ensemble. During sophomore year, our director told the trumpets that we needed to get at least one tuba in our whole ensemble, so I tried it out. I really started to like it, and worked my way up to the top band, the Wind Ensemble. We received several State Awards at tournaments and competitions. I also participated in the indoor drumline, and played the electric bass when they were in need of one badly. This was a great experience and let me see what the more official competitions were like. After playing in high school bands, it really helped establish a good basis on brass instruments and music in general. I had been playing piano and taking lessons since about 7 or 8 years old, which created a strong fundamental understanding of theory for the age I was at. This helped me play trumpet and tuba and high school, and move on to electric guitar later. In middle school, we started a band called “The Invisible Children.” We started out playing at our school and assemblies, then moved on the a couple bars. We didn’t get too big and had to sell our own venue tickets, but the whole idea got us some experience in the live music area. I’m really glad I took part in it, and hope we can get together years from now and play. After graduating from Thomas, I attend Capital University to this day, going for a Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology.
