Craig Kent, MD, has built a 30-year career in health system leadership by focusing on improving patient access, ensuring high-quality care, and providing advanced treatment to patients with complex conditions. Across every role he has taken on, Dr. Kent has remained committed to supporting research, expanding educational efforts, and strengthening clinical operations. His work has consistently contributed to the growth and stability of major healthcare institutions, as well as the advancement of future healthcare leaders.
Throughout his career, Dr. Craig Kent has held several prominent positions in academic medicine. He served as Division Chief in Vascular Surgery at Columbia University and Cornell University and led the Vascular Service line for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He then went on to become Chair of the Department of Surgery at The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. At Ohio State University, he served as Dean of the College of Medicine, Vice President for Health Sciences, and Co-Leader of the Health System. Most recently, he held the position of Executive Vice President of Health Affairs and CEO at the University of Virginia Health System.
His leadership and research achievements led to his induction into the National Academy of Medicine. In addition to this honor, he has served as President of the Society for Vascular Surgery, President of the Society of Surgical Chairs, and Chair of the American Board of Surgery, reflecting his influence across multiple areas of healthcare and academic surgery.
The National Institutes of Health has funded Craig Kent for over 30 years, and he has chaired the Surgery and Bioengineering study section, as well as other NIH committees. His research has explored topics ranging from molecular mechanisms in vascular disease to healthcare delivery and outcomes. He has written 360 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to 65 books and book chapters. His work has appeared in top-tier journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Editorial service has also been a part of his professional contributions. He has served as editor or associate editor for the Annals of Vascular Surgery, Contemporary Surgery, and Haimovici’s Vascular Surgery and has participated on editorial boards for multiple peer-reviewed publications.
