Crista Leung
Teacher in Markham, ON, Canada
Hi everyone!
My name is Crista and I am currently living and working as an Elementary Occasional Teacher in Markham, Ontario.
I graduated from the Concurrent Education program at Queen’s University. This past summer I received my Bachelor of Education with Primary/Junior qualifications. Prior to getting my BEd, I majored in English Literature and minored in World Language studies (Mandarin/ French). My passion for reading and writing about literature began in high school where my English teachers sought out creative ways to inspire me to write, and explore the ideas in what I read. My passion and skills in reading and writing continued to grow in my undergrad where I met more terrific teachers who have opened my eyes and mind to many great works by both classical and contemporary authors.
I was motivated to become an English teacher in my fourth year of undergrad where I began volunteering at the Writing Center as a Peer Writing Assistant (PWA). In my role as a PWA, I worked with first and second year undergraduate students to help them improve their academic and essay writing. I enjoyed my work very much and it was a very rewarding experience to help students become more competent writers and thinkers.
As a P/J teacher, a goal of mine is to foster 21st century learning by helping students become critical thinkers and communicators (please see "Visit my website" if you'd like to learn more about my vision of 21st century learning). I wish to keep learning and further my skills and knowledge in teaching literacy and English in the intermediate levels. Some topics that I would like to learn more about are: teaching media literacy, critical thinking, and self/peer assessment skills in reading and writing.
I look forward to learning with and from everyone in this course! ☺
