Dr. C.R. Prasad was born in Ongole, Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh. He did his B.E. (Mechanical) from Sri Venkateswara University of College of Engineering, Tirupati.He was the first batch of Mechanical Engineers to have passed out of the college. He started his career as an Engineer with Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and Nellore Thermal Station in Andhra Pradesh.

He has over 40 years of experience in Indian Energy Sector with thoroughexposure to various facets of the industry such as Exploration and Production of oil and natural gas, Engineering and Construction of large oil/gas production complexes located offshore, setting up of mega petrochemical complexes, petrochemical production etc. He worked as Director (Marketing & Planning), GAIL from October, 1994 and took over as Chairman & Managing Director of GAIL in September, 1996. Held additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director of Madras Refineries Ltd. (now known as Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd.) in 1999. He also acted as the Chairman of Mahanagar Gas Ltd., Mumbai, a joint venture of GAIL, British Gas and Government of Maharashtra formed for distribution of city gas in Mumbai. He also Chaired the Board of Indraprastha Gas Ltd., Delhi, a joint venture company of GAIL, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. and Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi formed for distribution of city gas and supply of Compressed Natural Gas to the transport sector in Delhi.
