Clare, explorer of atomic worlds and stalker of proteins, resides in Seattle and can be found performing research at the University of Washington. Fascinated by proteins, her principal research interests are to understand how proteins work together in cell signaling pathways and the hiccups inside our bodies leading to failure of these mechanisms that cause disease.

Her life as a scientist began following a voyage of self-discovery backpacking across Europe when Clare landed a place at the University of Leicester in the UK. After graduating in 2000 with an MChem degree she pursued a new found interest in NMR spectroscopy at Manchester University before being tempted into industry to develop cancer vaccine formulations. In industry she stayed for a while with a move to one of world's largest pharmaceutical companies.

However, not satisfied by the research limitations in industry, Clare returned to academic research where she delighted in the freedom to learn and discover to her heart's content. Perhaps crazy, Clare chose to play with proteins and has been obsessed ever since.

After being awarded a PhD in chemistry, Clare can now be found slowly circumnavigating the globe one job at a time as she delves into the mysteries of the protein universe.
