Cubase 12: Installation, Activation, and Licensing Overview

Cubase 12 was officially released last week on March 2nd, and it comes packed with a variety of new features that have excited many Cubase users. Although I haven't yet explored all the features in depth, I've already made a couple of videos on the new licensing system, which was introduced with Cubase 12 even before its release. Let's take a closer look at how the new licensing system works in practice.

To start, purchasing Cubase 12 can be done directly from the Steinberg website. For those upgrading from Cubase Pro 11, like myself, the upgrade cost is around €99 or $99. Once purchased, Steinberg will send you an email containing a download access code. You can redeem this code through the Steinberg Download Assistant. If you don't have the Download Assistant installed, you can find a link in the same email or on Steinberg's website. After entering your download access code, you'll be able to download and license your product.

The download for Cubase Pro 12 consists of multiple parts. Once the download is complete, you'll notice that Cubase 12 now has a new blue icon on your desktop. If you purchased an upgrade, the download process will also update your eLicenser Control Center to reflect the new Cubase 12 license. Although Cubase 12 does not require the dongle for operation, it’s necessary to update the license to prevent purchasing multiple upgrade licenses from a single Cubase 11 license.

Finally, if you've recently purchased Cubase 11, you can use the Steinberg Activation Manager to check for eligibility for a free upgrade to Cubase 12 under Steinberg’s grace period policy. Keep in mind that this new licensing system is still evolving, and more features will be added over time.
