Cubbys BBQ

Cubby’s BBQ possesses a reputation as one of the best barbecue restaurants in New Jersey and the New York City metropolitan area. Based in Hackensack, New Jersey, Cubby’s BBQ is known for its delicious barbecue meals and traditional American fare, as well as its convenient location a half-mile south of the Central Municipal Court of Bergen County and I-80. However, Cubby’s BBQ remains especially memorable for the actions of its owner, POW/MIA activist Bobby Egan. He initially gained renown as an activist by providing support for Vietnamese official Le Quang Khai to defect to the United States. Due to the defection, the U.S. government learned new details on POWs and MIAs in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Following Le Quang Khai’s defection, the North Korean government took a diplomatic interest in Bobby Egan and UN delegates began frequenting Cubby’s BBQ. Through this meeting, Cubby’s BBQ owner Bobby Egan became an unofficial ambassador for the North Koreans, traveling to the country and arranging trips for government officials for many years. Cubby’s BBQ unwittingly served as a venue for backdoor negotiations between North Koreans and Americans. Consequently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation hired Bobby Egan in an informant capacity and Bobby Egan eventually gained the position of President of the USA-DPRK Trade Council. Bobby Egan published many of his exploits in the 2010 book Eating with the Enemy: How I Waged Peace with North Korea from my BBQ Shack in Hackensack, which HBO is currently adapting into a film. Due to its ability to hold groups like the North Korean delegates, as well as sports team such as the New York Giants, Cubby’s BBQ carries recognition for holding large parties, as necessary. For parties under 25 people, Cubby’s BBQ offers a small-scale catering menu. Cubby’s BBQ offers varied portions of baby back ribs, half chickens, chicken fingers, and buffalo wings, depending on the size of the party. For larger parties, Cubby’s BBQ offers full catering, utilizing the entire facility so that patrons will not need to worry.
