”Societies never know it, but the war of an artist with his society is a lover’s war… what lovers do… is to reveal the beloved to himself, and with that revelation, make freedom real.”
- James Baldwin
Hi, my name is Dakota Nguyen. I’m working on a book that captures the heart of the Tenderloin, a San Francisco neighborhood historically misunderstood, yet rich in history, full of resilient people, and brimming with untold stories.
Drawing from my own experiences growing up in the Tenderloin, I want to share the voices of our neighbors, dreamers, workers, immigrants, and everyday people who made this community their own. This book is a collection of fictional short stories inspired by those who built their life here, each one offering a glimpse into the life and soul of the neighborhood.
Through storytelling, my goal is to show that the TL is more than its headlines. It is a living record not only of struggle and grief, but also of the spirit that sustains those who remain. With your support, I hope to honor my beloved neighborhood by sharing its humanity through stories that are rarely told.
Help me bring this project to life and give voice to a community that deserves to be seen and remembered.
