Dale Zak

Dale Zak is a mobile software developer passionate about using technology for social change.

After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan and spending a number of years developing applications for large corporate clients such as Caterpillar Inc, Ritchie Bros and Pitney Bowes, Dale has now shifted his focus to helping open source initiatives, exploring ways technology can help empower disadvantaged groups and spark civic engagement.

Over the past three years, Dale has contributed to Ushahidi's crowdsourced crisis mapping system developing an iOS and Windows Mobile app, helped The Extraordinaries build their micro-volunteer platform for the iPhone, as well as developed open source plugins for FrontlineSMS messaging system.

Dale has also coordinated several social good initiatives including organizing Mobile Tech 4 Social Change conference in Halifax, formed Apps4Good to bring together software developers to build iPhone apps for charity, established Repurposed Labs to re-purpose used computers into public internet terminals for low income communities and deployed I Vote Because map to spark a pro-democracy movement why voting is important in Canada.
