My father was very driven, a perfectionist, holding us to very high standards of achievement with little praise. But there was no question he loved us with all his heart.
He believed in the J.O.B. approach, and retired at 48, proving it could be done.
I worked hard, generally excelling at whatever I did, even through some youthful misadventures. But I always felt my employers received much more benefit from my efforts than my salary reflected.
A friend called one day and asked if I could find 20 OTR tires (giant tires priced at over $100k each!) for a mine in Africa. I did, and he thanked me. We repeated this several times.
When I figured out that the markup on the tires was 20%-50%, I began to see possibilities... I could source these things...why not find my own Buyers? Thus began my quest as a "Broker".
For some time, I worked to put things together, and met with mixed success. I tried every commodity under the sun...perhaps one reason for my mixed success!
But I couldn't replace my substantial salary. Yet I still felt the value proposition for my time was not worth it. So I worked my job all day, and worked as a broker all night...for longer than I care to admit.
After being cut out of a few deals which would have given me the freedom I so desired, I decided to take the next step (a risky step). Invest my own money, stop being a Broker, and become the Buyer/Seller.
I wanted to work with something I could hold in my hand, and didn't run millions or billions of dollars per transaction, which I didn't have, nor did I have access to.
Having developed a lot of contacts in Africa, and knowing Africa was rich in diamonds and gold, with just a few thousand dollars, I started doing very small diamond purchases. Some went well...others, not so much. But I could see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, and knew it wasn't a train!
One of my African broker contacts called one day and asked if I would invest in him to help him get his Diamond Dealer License. I did, and we developed a friendship and partnership.
