Daniel Percivall
Daniel Percivall was born in Germany, lived in London,
Frankfurt, New York City, Chicago, and Flint, before moving to Ft. Myers in
2003. His educational career started at a 500 year old boarding school in
Oswestry, England, where his art teacher nurtured his ability to render
realistic landscapes from pasta and wood shavings. After three years of the old
school in the country, Daniel started grade school in London in 1981. His
school offered many art electives and Daniel embraced them all, from design
& technology to printmaking. It wasn't until his final year of high school,
did Daniel have the opportunity to take black and white photography. During his
many trips to central London, Daniel captured people in the city and
architecture. His body of work at this time showed shadows and silhouettes and,
because of the long grey winters, the overall ambience was very grainy.
Daniel's final presentations show an experimental array of
techniques, including composite images (sandwich negatives), montage and hand
coloring. The experimentation was born from his need to pay homage or share appreciation
for art from the Renaissance to the 1900's. The trusted sources of inspiration
for him were, and still are Rene Magritte, M.C. Escher, Canaletto, Juan Gris,
Botticelli and Henry Peach Robinson.
Daniel has been teaching art, digital photography and
computer art at Canterbury School since 2003. He takes on all the assignments
and themes he provides his students everyday. After visiting the themes
repeatedly, Daniel finds new ways of seeing and thinking as an artist. He
strives to motivate and inspire students to embrace the elements and principles
of design for more successful results. Rather than saying, "Trial and error,"
Daniel would rather take on the mantra, "Preparedness + opportunity = luck."
