What are the Benefits of Mohs Micrographic Surgery for Skin Cancer?
Mohs micrographic surgery, or chemosurgery is a sophisticated technique used by trained dermatologists and surgeons such as Dr. Daniel Taheri for treating skin cancer. It was developed in early 1930s and is named after Dr. Frederic Mohs. It’s a microscopically controlled surgical procedure that ensures complete removal of skin cancer in one medical sitting.
Mohs micrographic surgery is used for removing skin cancer from the areas where tissue preservation is necessary, especially the face. This procedure is performed by Daniel Taheri, M.D. using local anesthesia. He gently removes the skin cancer and immediately examines the specimen under a microscope to ascertain if all of the tumor has been completely removed. When the tissue is there at the edges of the specimen, additional tissue removal is also undertaken by Dan Taheri in a sequential fashion until no tumor is left. Cure rates with Mohs micrographic surgery are much better than conventional surgery.
When is Mohs surgery used?
In cases where cancer is quickly growing, or is likely to recur, Mohs micrographic surgery is one of the best options. Mohs surgery is recommended when there’s danger of skin cancer spreading to other areas of the body. With the help of this procedure, Dr. Daniel Taheri can easily examine every
individual layer of the skin to search for cancer cells all layers are removed one by one. Until the skin cancer can been completely removed, Dr. Taheri will continue removing the remaining cancerous tissues layer by layer, examining each layer closely to search for the cancer.
Are there any risks associated with Mohs micrographic surgery?
As with other surgeries, some risks include:
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Pain or tenderness around the surgical area
Once the surgery is over, Dan Taheri may recommend some pain relieving medicines to manage any postoperative pain. Any infection after the surgery is treated with oral antibiotics.
