Recycling, once a foreign concept to the mass population, has now become one of the most widely publicised, understood and adhered to policies in the bid to rectify existing and prevent further environmental damage. A natural evolution of the ‘make-do and mend’ mindset which gained popularity during wartime in Britain, recycling is a key method for the prevention of unnecessary consumption and waste production. Recycling has gained a huge following, from business owners such as Danny Sawrij, through to top level politicians.

With recycling gaining a huge amount of momentum in the race to prevent environmental damage, it is becoming increasingly common to notice that consumables packaging is recyclable, or even already made from recycled materials. Items such as shampoo and shower gel are more often than not supplied in such packaging, and toilet roll offers an easy way to jump on-board with the recycling movement, with many brands being made from repurposed paper products.

On a domestic level, it is easy to do our bit, and the following are easy ways to participate in recycling, for the good of the planet:

Separating materials for waste collection – by segregating items, the chances of reusing more is increased. General waste is usually taken to large and environmentally unfriendly landfill sites, but items made from paper, plastic, metal and glass can often be recycled.

Buying products made from recycled goods – It is a legal requirement, not to mention a really good selling point, that companies clearly mark their products if they have been made from recycled materials, so it is easy to determine a more ethical purchase. It may not always be the cheapest, but it will not have expensive consequences for the environment!

Use recycling bins and banks – Most UK councils now supply households with a bin for not only general waste, but also one for recyclable items. There are also vast numbers of recycling banks, allowing for the deposit of clothing, glass, paper and other items. These banks are usually located at convenient locations so as to prevent laziness being a motive for not recycling, supermarkets, for example, are a very common setting.

It is vital for the effectiveness of recycling, that more people adopt the positive mindset held by Danny Sawrij, and embrace green techniques. It takes just a few minutes to choose products
