Dante Barry

New York, New York

Based in New York, Dante Barry is the VP of Membership & Engagement with Million Hoodies Movement for Justice, working to protect and empower young people of color from racial profiling and senseless gun violence. In this role, Dante oversees Million Hoodies’ chapter network, programs, and direct action organizing. Dante also supports the Roosevelt Institute's communications team as its Engagement Editor, managing the policy organization's digital engagement program.

Dante has been involved with progressive organizing for over nine years including time spent as a student organizer in the racial justice, anti-war, and student movements. His background is in grassroots engagement and online organizing while wokring with a variety of progressive nonprofits including the Roosevelt Institute Campus Network. While at the Campus Network, Dante ran operations and led the group's online organizing work, including training regional communications coordinators, developing and implementing national policy campaigns, and supporting communications.

Dante has provided digital consulting to a number of nonprofits and grassroots organizations including Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and has canvassed for a number of state and local elections in New Jersey. Dante has done stints at School Based Health Alliance and the Political Development Group, LLC.

As a media influencer, Dante has appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, HLN, Next New Deal, The Two River Times, PolicyMic, Truthout, Salon, ABC News, The Nation Magazine, Al Jazeera America, Youngist, and GenYNot. Dante received his BA in Political Science and Communication from Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Dante is a graduate of the 2011 New Organizing Institute New Media Bootcamp. In 2008, Dante was awarded with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Unsung Hero Award and was nominated again for the award in 2009.
