Hello, my name is Darius Copper and I am currently a second year Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Georgia. While that might sound like a pretty boring beginning to my biography, I have not told you that I also lost one/ fifth of my hearing when I was born. It was due to genes that were passed down from my mother, who got them from her mother, who then got it from her mother and so on. While this does not seem like a big deal, it was a struggle to keep up with my peers all throughout my years of learning, because I had to make an effort to learn the same materials even though sometimes I would not be able to hear everything. I chose this picture to represent my bio because my brother and I share the same experience. He also shares the same amount of hearing loss that I do, but based of our lives it would be hard to tell. My brother just started his fourth year at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is on track to Graduate this year with honors. My point in all this is that even though I have been conditioned to think of my hearing loss as a disability, I use it as a motivator so that I can prove all of the people that doubted me wrong. My hearing loss does not make me special it just makes me unique.
