In 1993, he left Alaska to attend Shattuck St. Mary’s, a well-respected preparatory school in Minnesota. During his time there, he played hockey, reinforcing his ability to work within a team, develop strategic thinking, and maintain composure under pressure. This experience instilled qualities later, serving him well in his law enforcement career.

Opting to stay in Minnesota for college, Darke attended Hamline University, where he graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology. His studies gave him a comprehensive understanding of crime trends, the judicial system, and the sociological factors influencing criminal behavior. This academic foundation prepared him for a career in law enforcement by equipping him with the knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of public safety and policing.

Darke Hull's journey in law enforcement began in 1999 when he joined the Portland Police Bureau. The early years of his career were dedicated to intensive training, where he completed the Basic and Advanced Police Academy programs. Following this, he underwent probationary rotations across multiple precincts, gaining firsthand experience in various policing functions. From 2000 to 2002, he was assigned to the Central Precinct as a patrol officer, where he actively responded to calls, conducted investigations, and worked to maintain public order.
