GHali Asma
Consultant, Public Speaker, and Social Media Manager in Montréal, Québec, Canada
I grew up in a small town; Teboulba (Tunisia). Being raised there made me learn how to be responsible at an early age. My mother was a bit sick when giving birth to my little sister so, I had to take care of the house shores, my little sister and, my studies. Despite of the obstacles I had undergone in my childhood as well as my teenage, I was firmly believing in the emancipation of women and social justice. I remember, whenever I had chance I'd secretly sneak out to read some hidden books or, run in the field. It might sound weird to you but, yeah 'my mother was very protective and she didn't want me to run outside or play with other kids.' Now that I grew up, I understood her point of view. After all, she had to 'mingle' with a culture that it isn't hers since she's originally Turkish.
Even though, the town I grew up in obliged some weird norms to us. I was always considered 'the rebellious'. I wouldn't accept that women cannot be equal to men or cannot do Business. Thus, I took my way out as a Human Rights Activist & a communication consultant. Since 2008, I have started my own campaign against women's violence and abuse. I soon, became involved in many NGO's that support similar causes such as: Amnesty International Tunisia, Oxfam International, The Whole Women Network Ontario, Femmes Démocrates Tunisie, CIAFT, UN Volunteers, The Seeds of Theater, UNDP, UNESCO etc.
Thanks to my diverse background (a father that is half-Lebanese/ half French and a Turkish mother), I mastered five languages at an early age (Arabic, French, English, German & Turkish) as well as several dialects. My communication skills together with my eloquence and my passion to 'empower' women, led me to get several contracts as an interpreter, a translator and Human Rights' official speaker for several conferences and occasions such as: UN conference day, The International Women's Day, TEDxCarthage, Histoire des femmes Noires, Debate Clubs (YAV, 2013) etc.
With the IT revolution, I found another way to conjugate my passion for communication and women empowerment (or better say my activism) which is through 'Social Entrepreneurship' . I offer not only translating, tutoring, editing and writing assessment but also, communication tools and tips for women to have wings and could fly freely without fear, oppression or guilt.
