Well to start things off its the world wide web that requires a special software to access it one of them being called TOR. TOR is specifically used to keep things hidden in a sense, like online content that is not visible by a search engine which helps you stay under the radar.

What is the dark web used for?

Being able to communicate in oppressive countries on the web without being eavesdropped on. Partaking in illegal activity like selling/buying drugs, joining in on terrorist groups and other criminal acts. The way these people get away with purchasing and selling illegal stuff is through using bitcoin, an online currency.
