G. Darrell Hulsey has established a respected 35-year career as an entrepreneur and executive in the healthcare management field. Since 2016, he has served as CEO of Professional Billing, Inc. (PBI), where he oversees revenue cycle and practice management services for physician practices across more than 15 states. The company supports a network of more than 200 practices under its leadership. Along with his professional responsibilities, he has been devoted to philanthropy for over three decades, actively donating and volunteering with a range of organizations.
His professional journey started in 1991 when Darrell Hulsey joined CompMed/Medaphis Physician Services, now part of McKesson, as a Senior Operations Manager. Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, he was responsible for managing hospital-based physician practices in four states. His role also included negotiating reimbursement and contractual agreements with third-party payors and expanding business opportunities across several regions.
After three years, he co-founded Medical Management Professionals (MMP) with six partners. Over the years, he held various leadership positions within the company, contributing to its growth and success. In 1998, the company was sold to CBIZ, where he rose to Vice President and later became President and CEO. When MMP returned to private ownership in 2013, Darrell continued leading the firm until 2016, when he partnered with PBI and took on his current role as CEO. During his tenure with MMP, the organization managed over 34 million procedures, processed $5 billion in client charges, and collected more than $2 billion in client revenues. SEC filings showed the company achieved $165 million in revenue and $21 million in earnings.
In his leadership roles at MMP, he worked across all aspects of the business, including operations, compliance, IT, finance, HR, and mergers. From 2007 to 2013, while serving as President and CEO, he grew revenue from $90 million to $165 million, consolidated 12 billing systems into four, reduced operating costs by more than 45%, and decreased staff count by approximately 35%. Earlier, as Executive Vice President of Operations for the East Region, Hulsey increased revenues by 83% and profits by 98%, while expanding into 10 states and delivering consistent profit margins.
At PBI, he has guided the company to 250% growth in revenue from 2016 to 2025. He has led the acquisition and integration of five companies, creating 30% cost savings within 18 months of each deal. He also introduced advanced data analytics and AI-driven billing platforms, which improved collections by 15% annually, reduced denials by 25%, and lowered administrative overhead by 40%. His focus on compliance has ensured that all operations remain aligned with HIPAA and CMS regulations.
For more than 35 years, he has supported religious charities, contributed to St. Jude’s Hospital, and given to the Epilepsy Foundation of America. A graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in Health Management and a concentration in Accounting, he has also been a consistent supporter of his alma mater for over three decades.
