Daryl Katz
Owner of the Edmonton Oilers in New York
Daryl Katz is one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders. With a background in law, Daryl transitioned from a brief legal career to forging a unique entrepreneurial path that has left a significant mark on multiple industries. He is the Founder and Chairman of Katz Group, one of North America's leading private companies with diversified interests spanning sports and entertainment, real estate, hospitality, retail cannabis, and various other private and public investments.
Daryl’s entrepreneurial journey began with the creation of Canada’s second largest integrated pharmacy business, which he eventually sold for over C$4.5 billion. This venture laid the foundation for his future successes, allowing him to build one of Canada’s largest privately-owned real estate development and ownership companies.
A major highlight of Daryl Katz’s career is his acquisition of the Edmonton Oilers, one of the NHL’s most storied and valuable franchises. His vision extended beyond the ice rink; he spearheaded a transformative partnership with the City of Edmonton to develop and operate Rogers Place, an award-winning sports and entertainment venue. This initiative was a cornerstone of his larger vision for the ICE District, one of the world's largest and most successful sports and entertainment-based mixed-use real estate developments.
Most of Daryl’s current business enterprises are housed under OEG Inc., a North American leader in sports and entertainment, retail cannabis, hospitality, and real estate. Additionally, Katz Group owns Dark Castle Entertainment, a film and television production company based in Los Angeles, California, further diversifying its portfolio.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Katz is deeply committed to his hometown. He earned his law degree from the University of Alberta Law School and, throughout his career, has remained dedicated to enhancing the city through various professional and philanthropic endeavors. Daryl Katz has donated tens of millions of dollars to support health care, education, and at-risk youth, reflecting his commitment to giving back to the community.
Daryl Katz also served as a director on the inaugural Board of Alberta Investment Management Co (AIMCO) from 2007 to 2013.
