After graduating from Brown University, David Alport worked as a marketing director for American Express. Here, he worked with partners in the travel industry, including airlines, cruise lines, and hotels. He then used his knowledge of the travel industry to found a gay and lesbian travel publishing company called Out & About. It eventually grew to serve the demand of nearly 200,000 paying customers with monthly newsletters, guidebooks, and a pay-for-content web site. David Alport later incorporated this enterprise into the PlanetOut, Inc., platform, and he served that company as vice president of premium services and travel.

After working as a consultant for the travel industry, David Alport joined the Global Business Coalition on Health in New York in 2009. This organization’s goal is to mobilize the business sector into improving health globally, with emphasis on combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. Mr. Alport served as its vice president for communications, global events, and external affairs until May 2013. He is currently employed as Senior Vice President of Communications in the Office of Ray Chambers, the United Nations Special Envoy for Financing the Health Millennium Development Goals and for Malaria.
