His education includes an Associate of Arts degree from Bluefield College in 1970 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1972 (English Major). In 1975, he received his Juris Doctorate degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary.
He was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1975, to the West Virginia State Bar in 2003, and practices in all local, state, and federal courts, including the Virginia Supreme Court, the U. S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, representing creditors only. He also practices before various state agencies, including the Virginia ABC Board, and the Virginia Unemployment Agency.
