Introduce yourself. Who are you?
David James Hulme. I am 19 years old. I was born in Rochester, New York. I am double majoring in Economics & Accounting at the University of Massachusetts.
Tell us what you like your school?
I love UMass. Coming here was the best decision of my life. It had nothing to do with the incredible academics or the facilities here. I didn't make my decision based around school's incredible faculty or the tools available to me only at research university. I came to UMass because of the incredibly good vibrations I got when I stepped on campus for the first time. I find serenity with myself when I am here. I only have good thoughts when I hear the words 'UMass." I think of my wonderful friends. I think of our explosive school spirit. I think of the best university in the whole country.
What is your passion?
I really want to make an impact within my communities. I really want to see improvements in every area I've lived in when dealing with immigrants & refugees. There are certain advantages U.S. citizens take for granted that are unavailable to those who have been politically alienated or seeking refuge here in the states. Before the end of my time here, I want to start an RSO that specifically works with immigrants and refugees in providing help with legal casework counseling, driving permits/test, housing, and assistance with Green Cards. I also think we would be able to provide English as a second language tutoring.
What do you want to do in the future?
That is a good question! I like to take life one day at a time. That being said, I can imagine myself working at an accounting firm post graduation. It is also very likely I end up doing something completely different. I would predict more schooling in my future. I love learning. Whether this is a PhD in Economics or a Juris Doctor law degree, only the future would tell. Looking at the long-term, being an educator or a tax attorney would be my dream professions.
What do you like to do outside of academics?
I love running. I run about 35 miles every week; it helps to keep me feeling mentally & physically strong. I'm also a huge supporter of the United States Mens National Soccer Team. I was able to watch them play in an international friendly prior to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The atmosphere was absolutely incredible.
