Yes, one of THOSE. We who are ultra-rational and analytic, taking pride in seeing things as they are at the core, not how they are made to seem on the surface. Our world is entirely machines, structures, and dynamic processes and we categorize them all by percentage efficiency and effectiveness. There is no uncertainty in our world, except where humans interfere, and we try to manage those within probability bounds. Sometimes it works. Great innovators and creators (the root of the word "Engineer" is Innovate), but not usually great artists and not always empathetic to more balanced individuals (non-Engineers).
In essence, Scientists discover the truth about how our physical world works, and we Engineers convert that truth into the Tools, Technology, Mechanisms and Structures that achieve society's goals and dreams. When times are good, the artists and thinkers hold sway and we are their Oompa Loompas. When time are tough, we are the heroes that protect society from threats and create new and exciting opportunities.
We are reliable and loyal friends, insightful analysts, and relentless seekers of new and creative solutions to problems that may not yet even be recognized. Lies and deception are simply not within our frame of reference, so we have little success at the pinnacle of business or political leadership, but we are essential advisors to charismatic leaders.
I am proud to be a Professional Engineer of Electronics and Computers, to have produced innovative new products at the leading edge of technology, making possible things that had never before been dreamed. To brought a little order to the world and dispelled a little chaos.
