San Destin, Florida was my home for summer vacations for many years, until the year 2016. My parents decided it was in our best interest to try a new vacation spot. They decided on San Pedro, Belize! A little island off mainland Belize only accessible by a small boat or propeller plane. The first time we flew into “San Pedro International Airport” I knew I was about to step foot on the tropical paradise. San Pedro, Belize has continued to define who I am throughout the years. Every morning everyone on the island wakes up at 6 am to go on a run, which I would follow as I was in the process of training for the cross-country season. After our daily morning run, we would go get my signature breakfast, a burrito filled with scrambled eggs, sausage, and cheese. With the usual coffee and orange juice to follow. As our day continued, we would get ready to go out by the beach and pool to swim and sunbathe, only to be one of the few people at the pool. As an introverted individual, this was the perfect paradise I could imagine. As the day continued, we would go snorkeling by the second largest reef in the world, jump on a water trampoline, kayak, and of course, play a casual game of pick up soccer with the locals. Soccer has been a part of my life the longest and being able to play with another culture was truly remarkable. Once nighttime rolled around, we were listening to live music and eating my favorite fresh seafood or steak all rolled up in a gigantic burrito. But not only was I defined by the Belizean ways, the friendliness and culture behind the natives not only defined me but already represented who I am.
