Dr Dawn Benson

I am a senior lecturer and researcher at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

My academic interests are in Disability Studies and education. Particularly I am interested in the process of inclusion and inclusive education within the current UK education system and dichotomies which exist between the SEN legal framework and anti discrimination legislation.
My recent research on ‘Birth Injury, Disabling Families and Enabling Human Factors’ engages principles of Human Factors and safety systems within High Reliability Organisations to highlight the value which families and in particular parents of disabled children add to debates about risk, opportunity and reliability.
