Deb Hall

I survived childbirth on an U.S. Air force base in the high desert of central Washington State in the late fifties. After my young father died of cancer, due to exposure to radiation during A-bomb testing in the West, my mother moved to Oregon and remarried. This resulted in a large "Brady Bunch" style family that was full of both conflict and fun- not at all like the television show. Raised in, and deeply influenced by, the high desert in Oregon and Washington I took to photography at a young age influenced by Mel Olmstead and Wilma Roberts. My yellow Volkswagen bug took me to Rochester, New York where I received a B.F.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology in Photographic Illustration. I subsequently got married and moved to Rhode Island and then Los Angeles. In California I attended Art Center College of Design in graphic design and worked for several designers in the Los Angeles area. I had a son. Not wanting to raise a child in Los Angeles we moved back to upstate New York and bought a design and printing business. We had another son. Life happens: divorce, Kent State University and an M.F.A. in Visual/Digital Arts from Vermont College, where I had the good fortune to work with Doug Ashford (Group Material), Steven Kurtz (Critical Arts Ensemble), Brian Wallis and Claire Pentecoste(SAIC). I am currently an Associate professor of Art at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, where I continue to exhibit and work as an artist using photography, drawing, design and typography.
