Delaney Erwin
Student in Athens, Georgia
My name is Delaney, and I play soccer here at the University of Georgia. I’ve been playing soccer since I was four years old, and since then, the sport has either directly or indirectly impacted every aspect of my life. As far as direct effects, soccer postponed my family’s recent move to St. Petersburg, Florida for two whole years, shaped almost every non-familial relationship that I value thus far in my life, and even was the deciding factor in where I would attend college. Because soccer requires such rigorous travel, I have quite literally been all over the country for the sport. Not only have I been to nearly every major city in the United States, but I have gone as far as Madrid, Spain to play the game. Soccer has also proved very beneficial in terms of the character traits it has developed since I began playing. I have learned that the concept of a “peak” is a myth, and that with the right amount of effort and dedication, the limit to one’s capabilities and success does not exist. I also place lots of value in relationships because I am so accustomed to the family-oriented environment that accompanies being on a soccer team. I believe soccer will continue to be the largest variable in shaping my future endeavors for the rest of the time I spend at the University of Georgia.
