My name is Jose Castillo and I currently reside in Sylmar, California. I am a 38 year old, self-taught artist with minimal art instruction. I grew up in Echo Park, California and attended Belmont High School. At a young age I discovered that I had Dyslexia and as a result, art became an outlet for me to cope with my Dyslexic learning disability. At the age of 18 while going to school, I had the honor to work for Steve Kaufman under whose direction, I learned immensely. Upon my graduation, my family was experiencing financial problems and moved out to Sylmar, Ca. In order to assist my family, I needed to take a 2nd and 3rd shift in order to make "ends meet!" Consequently, my focus in art was not of priority, yet my passion for art only became stronger.
My greatest sources of inspiration come from the following artists; Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Steve Kaufman, along with other comic book illustrators. Keeping with the theme of Pop Art, I have recently begun creating pieces that were penciled in thoughts for many years. The pieces are created using a 6 band stamp and ink pad, when observed closely, the artwork is stamped using the individual's birth date or other meaningful dates relating to the subject. I feel as though my art technique is original and will be a focal point from your gallery to an aficionado's homeIt would be a pleasure in working with you in the near future.
