Deniz Ekinci

Dr. Ekinci is an Academician in Geography. He joined the faculty at Istanbul University in 2000. He obtained his PhD. in Physical Geography from Istanbul University in 2004. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007 and full professor in 2013. His research interests span a wide range of topics in geography and related fields and involve
geomorphology, hydrography, natural hazards, GIS, modeling, mapping, Geo-morpho-tourism, geopolitics, and geography education.
He has published a wide range of works on his research interests. Dr. Ekinci has 215 publications, 90 of which are
international and 125 are national. He published more than 32 papers in national and international scientific journals.
Dr. Ekinci authored and co-authored/edited 64 books and 23 book chapters in Turkish and English. He presented 96 presentations at national and international conferences. His works have been cited more than 2000. He has directed
38 projects that received funding from local and national institutes. He mentored 12 PhD and 17 master’s students.
Dr. Ekinci has taught undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses at Istanbul University. He has held administrative positions such as member of the IU Senate, deputy dean of the faculty, head of geography,
and board memberships in faculties and research centers.
He is the founder of the Geography, Geographical Information Systems, Emergency, and Disaster Management
programs at Istanbul University Open and Distance Education Faculty.
Dr. Ekinci has served on the editorial board of academic journals. He is on the referee board of nearly 20 national and
international journals.
He organized national and international conferences and acted as a member of scientific boards.
Ekinci has taken part in various television programs and documentaries and wrote daily blogs and news posts. Ekinci
writes articles and shares opinions for the public interest in the digital media called Sivil Siyaset Girisimi.
Ekinci has conducted scientific and technical field studies for many geographical icons such as the Lake District in North America, the Caspian Basin, the Great Rift Line, the Dead Sea, the Aral and Lake Issyk-Kul, the Alpine Orogenic Belt, the Wallace Line, Niagara Falls, the Sahara, and the Arabian Desert.
Dr. Ekinci is a member of the Turkish Geographical Society, the Turkish American Scientists and Scholars Association, the Touring and Automobile Club of Turkey, the Turkey Earthquake Association, and The American Association of Geographers (AAG).
